Feb. 19-27: Avant Media Presents the inaugural Avant Music Festival, Five Nights of Performances in New York City

Festival Passes, as well as multi-night subscriptions, are available starting Feb. 1: Talented young interpreters in New York featured, and the influence of the performer on experimental music.

MEDIA ADVISORY
BROOKLYN, N.Y. / PR FREE / Jan 26 2010 --
Avant Media, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to collaborative performance, today announced the first-ever Avant Music Festival.

The Festival presents five nights of live performances - Feb. 19-27 at Wild Project in New York City. The Avant Music Festival will feature some of the most talented young interpreters in New York, highlighting the influence of the performer on experimental music from the 20th century and today.

The Avant Music Festival is Avant Media’s first festival of music exploring the nature of collaboration. The performer is a critical and powerful influence on both the composition and realization of some of the most influential music of the last 70 years. The performers appearing are dedicated to the vibrant history and the exciting future of modern classical music.

The festival is curated by Avant Media artistic director, Randy Gibson, and experimental vocalist Megan Schubert to reflect the intense and multi-faceted relationship between composer and performer.

“I prefer to write music not for instruments, but for performers,” said Gibson, whose work bookends the show. “For me, the relationship I have with my performers is the most valuable I have. It is this collaboration of ideas and process that leads me to a higher plane of understanding of my work, and allows me to push the performers and audience to that same plane.”

The full list of performances is as follows:

- Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 – Randy Gibson’s "Apparitions of The Four Pillars," an immersive sound world of pure primal harmonic relationships and visceral, improvised melodies. With special guest soloist: experimental violinist, champion of new music, and founder of the distinguished FLUX quartet, Tom Chiu.

- Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 – An evening of works by John Cage featuring the loadbang ensemble, the MIVOS quartet, Megan Schubert, Randy Gibson, and Jude Traxler,

- Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 – Music für Solisten – Solo performances by some of the most talented young interpreters in New York – featuring: Nicole Camacho, Annie Lyle, Mariel Roberts, Megan Schubert, Jude Traxler and Kobe Van Cauwenberghe

- Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 – Music of Karlheinz Stockhausen – featuring "Am Himmel wandre ich" performed by Megan Schubert and Jeff Gavett and "Die 7 Lieder der Tage" performed by Christie Finn.

- Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 – Randy Gibson’s "Apparitions of The Four Pillars"

Tickets to individual concerts for $15, $5 for students, and Festival Passes, as well as multi-night subscriptions, are available starting Feb. 1 exclusively from AvantMedia.org (http://www.avantmedia.org).

All performances will start at 8:00 p.m. at Wild Project - 195 East 3rd Street.
