ACDO Announces 15,000 Cell Phones, $70,000 To Charities Across The Country

Winners abound as more and more nonprofit organizations, churches, groups and schools are discovering the ease and potential of cell phone collection campaigns as fundraisers and recycling programs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WARREN, Michigan / PR FREE / Apr 20 2005 --
Winners abound as more and more nonprofit organizations, churches, groups and schools are discovering the ease and potential of cell phone collection campaigns as fundraisers and recycling programs.

To date, the American Cellular Donation Organization (ACDO), a nonprofit organization based in Warren, Michigan, has processed about 15,000 cell phones within the past nine months, resulting in approximately $70,000 in cash donated to a variety of charitable groups.

“The money is nice, but the best part is that everyone wins with this program”, ACDO founder and CEO Vincent Serio said recently. “Donors win because they can help their favorite cause without having to go ‘out-of-pocket,’ the organizations win because they are raising cash, and the environment wins because we are helping to take toxin-filled cell phones out of the waste stream”

ACDO turns the donated cell phones into cash through their refurbishment and reintroduction into the wireless market, both domestically and overseas.

Fundraising groups also seem to appreciate the marketing materials and publicity support ACDO provides, free of charge.

“Every organization, group, church or school that works with us is provided with a ‘Welcome Kit’ that includes posters, signs, brochures and boxes,” Serio said.

He added that ACDO works with newspapers and radio stations in and around the fundraising group’s town, distributing press releases to further bring attention to the group’s efforts.

“I would say there are very few companies that provide this type of support, and we’re glad to do it," he said.

According to industry statistics, there are approximately 500 million used, idle cell phones in the United States currently. That figure grows by roughly 80 million every year as users strive to keep up with the latest technology, such as camera phones and other gizmos. With that rate of growth, there very likely will be about one billion such units gathering dust by 2010.

“There is a tremendous opportunity for groups to collect used cell phones and recycle them and raise some cash,” he said.

People looking to donate cell phones to no particular cause may visit www.cellulardonation.org/zip.asp for the dropoff location nearest them.
