HERC Rallies Community To Fght Against Environmental Racism, With Its Annual Walk Dedicated To Armani Johnson

Breathing Counts, the annual walkathon of the Bayview Health and Environmental Resource Center (HERC), will be Saturday, March 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its headquarters, 6301 Third Street, San Francisco, California.

MEDIA ADVISORY
SAN FRANCISCO, California / PR FREE / Mar 24 2005 --
Breathing Counts, the annual walkathon of the Bayview Health and Environmental Resource Center (HERC), will be Saturday, March 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its headquarters, 6301 Third Street, San Francisco, California. This year’s walk is dedicated to Armani Johnson, who died from an asthmatic attack in 2002, at the age of four.

“My son told his teacher he was not feeling well,” said Natasha Madaris, Armani’s mother. “The teacher responded by sending him to the restroom alone. When he was discovered he was lying on the bathroom floor unconscious.”

Betty McGee, HERC’s executive director and a resident of Bayview Hunters Point for 20 years, said she long has been concerned with the environmental effects on residents of the naval shipyard at Hunters Point and the utility power plant.

“When the residents and schools of Bayview Hunters Point open their windows for fresh air, I want to be sure they are getting fresh air, not a large dose of pollutants and poor health,” said McGee. “It is important for the people in this area to have the same indoor and outdoor air quality as the more affluent areas.”

A first look at asthma’s prevalence in San Francisco was a survey conducted by the Bayview Hunters Point Health and Environmental Assessment Task Force (2000). A representative random sample of Bayview Hunter’s Point residents identified 15 percent to 21 percent of the children as having asthma, higher than any other San Francisco community.

Breathing Counts is a fundraising and educational event supporting HERC’s efforts toward pediatric and adult asthma management in disenfranchised communities. With a goal to attract 300 youth and adult participants, it brings environmental health issues to the forefront of the community. Participants will complete a 2.8-mile walk between HERC’s main office and Monster Park, and will include other activities and informational sharing with the community.

HERC’s mission is to empower the residents of Bayview Hunters Point to meet the challenges of healthy living within an urban environment scarred by more than 50 years of environmental pollutants. HERC works with a consortium of community-based organizations to develop culturally effective, evidence-based interventions to eliminate industrial pollution and to improve health and lifestyle habits. More information, regarding HERC and its services, is available at www.bayviewherc.org.
