Sprayed Acoustic Material or “Popcorn” ceiling, which is commonly found on the ceilings of most homes and apartments, often contains asbestos and may potentially release minute fibers of asbestos as it deteriorates or if it is disturbed. Add to this the occasional water damage which comes with heavy rain fall, and the potential for some serious indoor air quality problems are created.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, interior sources of asbestos include deteriorating, damaged, or disturbed acoustical ceiling materials (“Popcorn or Cottage Cheese” ceiling), insulation, fireproofing, acoustical materials, and floor tiles. Prolonged exposure to asbestos released by these materials often causes no immediate symptoms, but carries long-term risk of chest and abdominal cancers and lung diseases. Smokers are at a higher risk of developing asbestos-induced lung cancer.

Testing these materials for the presence of asbestos is advisable, as weather or renovation related disturbances may cause asbestos containing materials to release asbestos fibers throughout the air within a home.
